Most state legislatures have chosen a state flower and a state bird for their state. Some have also named a state tree in addition. Here is a look at some of those selections.

It isn’t surprising to learn that the buckeye is the state tree for Ohio since this state calls itself the buckeye state. The state flower is the native large flowered trillium.

The state of Tennessee has named a state flower as well as a state wildflower. The former is the iris, while the latter is the passionfruit vine.

Appropriately enough, the state of Texas chose the native Texas bluebonnet for its state flower. In addition, its state tree is the pecan.

The same state tree or state flower can be chosen by multiple states as is the case with the southern magnolia. This was named the state flower for both Louisiana and Mississippi. In addition, Louisiana chose the bald cypress as its state tree.

In Mississippi, the southern magnolia is both the state tree and the state flower.

The rhododendrons have been honored in various states. The western rhododendron was named the state flower for the state of Washington, while the big rhododendron was selected by the state of West Virginia as its state flower. Washington chose the western hemlock as its state tree.

In addition, West Virginia chose the sugar maple as its state tree.

The state of Florida chose the native sabal palm as its native tree. Appropriately enough, the orange blossom is Florida’s state flower. The state wildflower is the coreopsis.

Unlike most states, California has two official state trees. These are two special natives—the sequoia and the redwood. For its state flower, California chose the California poppy, one of the state’s wildflowers. Some individual cities or towns in California have honored certain plants. The avocado capital of the world is Fallbrook, California. Fresno, California calls itself the Raisin Capital of the world.

The state of Arizona chose the native saguaro cactus as the state flower. The state tree is the palo verde.

Michigan chose the apple blossom as its state flower. The dwarf iris was selected as the state’s wildflower. This lives along the sand dunes of Lake Michigan. The state tree is the lovely eastern white pine.

Oregon chose one of its native plants for the state flower, the Oregon grape holly. The state tree is the Douglas fir. In the state, the champion Douglas fir rises to over 320 feet in height.

The sugar maple has been selected by both West Virginia and Wisconsin as the official state tree. The same is true for New York and Vermont. Wisconsin named the wood violet as its state flower. In addition, New York chose the rose as the state flower. The state flower for Vermont is red clover.

Various kinds of oaks have been named state trees. The white oak is the official state tree for Connecticut, Illinois, and Maryland.

The live oak was named the state tree for Georgia, while the Cherokee rose is the state flower.

Iowa selected the oak (no particular species) as its state tree and the wild rose as its state flower. The red oak was selected by New Jersey as the state tree and the purple violet as the state flower.
